EQUATORIAL Guinea popularly known as Nzalang Nacional (nation's light) are new Africa football queens. Hosts has lifted African Women Championships (AWC) title after defeating South Africa 4-0 in a final match of the 8th edition played on Sunday at Malabo Stadium.
Playing before The Republic President Teodoro Obiang Mbasogo who was the chief guest, Equatorial Guinea players started the match aggressively with several dangerous moves against the opponent, but South Africa defence under goalie Thokozile Mndaweni was smart enough to thwart all attempts from the hosts.
However, Equatorial Guinea's efforts pay dividends two minutes to halftime when their last striker Gloria Chinasa scored through a head ball following a corner taken by Genoveva Anonman.
Despite being behind, South African nick named Banyana Banyana started second half with the same rhythm, putting the ball down with one-two passes in the midfield searching for an equaliser. In the 52nd minute their tall striker Andisiwe Mgcoyi penetrated Equatorial Guinea defence after receiving a pass from Sister Amanda but she shot wide.
South Africa seems to lost concentration of the game as minutes ticked away. Thus, allowed Equatorial Guinea to score three quick goals within five minutes. Substitute Adriana Costa who came in for Jade Boho in the 66th minute scored second goal a minute later after connecting home Genoveva Anonman's corner ball.
Anonman who emerged top scorer of the tournament with six goals put Equatorial Guinea victory beyond reasonable doubt when she scored third goal in the 70th minute. A minute later, Gloria Chinasa made it 4-0 after well finishing following a right flank cross by Adriana Costa.
In a play off match at the same venue, Cameroons walk away with bronze medals by a 1-0 victory against Nigeria (Super Falcons). Striker Deborah Enganamouit scored the lone goal in the 26th minute with a power packed shot inside 18-metre box that goalie Tochukwu Oluehi could not manage to stop it.
