The Lagos State Medical Guild on Monday announced plans to build a housing estate for its members to enable them to own their own houses before retirement.
Dr Tajudeen Salau, General Secretary of the Guild and Chairman of the housing project, made this known at the foundation laying ceremony of the Medical Guild Estate.
The proposed estate, located at Wawa on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, would contain 264 units of three-bedroom apartments and duplexes with roads, drainage, parking lots and green areas.
He said that the idea was to ensure that doctors had decent roofs over their heads pointing out that ``doctors, because of their busy schedules, have little or no time to oversee the construction of houses''.
He said that so far, a N60 million loan had been secured from First Bank and N80 million from Equatorial Trust Bank to kick start the project, while Union Homes had provided them with affordable mortgage plan.
Salau said that the project had already attracted 143 subscribers while another 121 were expected to take up the units.
"We currently have 143 subscribers and even though response has been fantastic, we need more subscribers to take up the remaining units", he said.
He said that the Lagos and Ogun governments had pledged their full support for the project.
