As part of efforts to give back to its host community, the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Lagos Province 23, renovated and donated items to Oke Ifako Nursery and Primary School.
The pastor in charge of the province, Brown Oyitso, said apart from the donations, the church had adopted the school and would continue to attend to the school’s needs.
He said, “The donations are part of efforts to give back to our host community. We have adopted the school and we will continue to maintain and provide for the school. We renovated an entire block of the school, provided them with an 8KVA generator, bought new classroom furniture, construct a borehole and also provided them with over 1,000 exercise books.
“Apart from the school, the church provided Gbagada General Hospital with 1,000 bed sheets and a washing machine; we refurbished the Ifako Police Station, repaired street lights in the area and also donated a home economics lab to another school.”
PUNCH Metro learnt that prior to the donations, the school had no electricity or water.
The head teacher of the school, Mrs. Funke Ojo, said the school owed Power Holding Company of Nigeria unpaid bills and had been disconnected from electricity since last year.
Ojo added that there had been no water in the school for many years. She expressed delight over the donations.
“At least 689 pupils will benefit from this. The church has rescued us. Last year, PHCN came to disconnect us and we pleaded with them but they said our electricity bill was too high and we could not pay. The church got us a generator and renovated the school. We now have water,” she said.
A primary six pupil, Ruth David, said prior to the donations, pupils had to fetch water from outside the school premises before they could make use of the toilet.
She said the church had come to their rescue by not only renovating the toilets but also providing water.
The pastor’s wife, Helen Oyitso, who is also in charge of the women’s ministry, said children were the future and were entitled to quality education.
She said the plan of the church was to transform the entire school on the long run
She said, “Apart from this donation, we are embarking on free training for staff of the school. We will also equip the sick bay and the information technology lab.”
