Members of the Shi’ites Islamic sect under the auspice of Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) have demanded the exhumation of their members allegedly maimed, killed during the sect’s clash with men of the Nigerian Army in Zaria and buried in mass grave in Kaduna.
This was as it called on the international community, especially the United Nations, European Union, African Union, ECOWAS and the International Criminal Court to add more pressure on the President Muhammadu Buhari led the government to release IMN leader, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky who has been in DSS custody since over 700 days ago.
A member of Free Zakzaky campaign committee, Sheikh Abdulhamid Bello stated this during press conference in Kaduna, titled ‘two years horrendous Zaria Massacre and the continued detention of Sheikh Zakzaky,’ said the need to exhume all its members killed by the army was for them to have proper identification and burial according to Islamic rites.
According to him, “it is unfortunate that within these two years, the Islamic Movement has continued to be persecuted and denied our religious rights.
“But We have compiled a detail report of everything that happens and submitted to the International Criminal Court at the Hague. They have since announced that they have opened preliminary into the matter.”
“We call on the international community, and especially the UN, EU, AU, ECOWAS and the ICC to add more pressure on the government to live up to its responsibilities as regards to the issue of the Islamic Movement in general and Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky in particular or be prepared to be ostracized and convicted.”
Speaking further, Sheikh Bello demanded the immediate release of the Sheikh Zakzaky, his wife and other members who according to him ‘were unlawfully detained’ adding that all those found to be responsible either in the planning or execution of horrendous attacks on our lives and properties must be brought to book, irrespective of their status.
According to him, “our demands remain as always the immediate release of Sheikh Zakzaky, his wife and all the hundreds being detained in various detention facilities across the country. Secondly, we demand that the corpses of all those killed, including those in the mass graves, must be exhumed and returned to us for identification and befitting burial according to Islamic rites.
“Also, all our confiscated properties must be returned to us and destroyed properties adequately compensated for, while we demand an open, independent and impartial inquiry to unearth the truth. Such an inquiry must have as members, persons with credible character, and there must be full participation of internationally accepted human rights groups as observers.
“Lastly, all those found to be responsible either in the planning or execution of these horrendous attacks must be brought to book, irrespective of their status,” the IMN leader said.
