Determined to rid Delta State of criminals, police detectives in Asaba, yesterday arrested six suspected fraudsters with thirty-one different ATM cards.
According to reports, the suspects were arrested on a tip-off around traffic-light junction, Asaba, where they had to access a new generation bank (name withheld) with ATM card.
Expectedly, there have been hue and cry of ATM fraudsters allegedly ripping off unsuspecting residents of Asaba and its environs in the past two months. In most cases, the fraudsters pose as customers under the guise of withdrawing money with ATM and in the process, monitor the pin code of those withdrawing money.
Investigation revealed that these fraudsters are often well dressed, position themselves around busy banks including brandishing ATM card(s) of the bank after which they move closer to the unsuspecting persons withdrawing money in the box while they perfect the fraudulent means to withdraw money in their account.
Further investigation revealed that many of the ATM fraudsters had at gun point, robbed persons and cart away their ATM cards after their victims are allegedly subjected to showing them (fraudsters) the pin code to operate with.
But the police image maker in the state, Mrs. Celestina Kalu, who confirmed the arrest of the suspects, said they were arrested around the Traffic-Light, Asaba where they had made several attempts to withdraw money through ATM which failed before the security men invited the police.
She said: “The six suspects are presently helping the police at the State CID. The police recovered N260,000, 31 different ATMs from them while they made useful statements to the police as they will be charged to court on completion of investigation”.
Kalu also gave the names of the suspects as Frank Okwe (36), Emeka Agbani (34), John Bassey (41), Tom Joseph (38) and Felix Kangba (33).
