Governing Council of Ebonyi State University has denied that it offered N70m to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to stop investigations into the tenure of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Francis Idike.
The EBSU Governing Council said this on Saturday in Abakaliki.
It also stated that its recommendation for Idike’s reappointment was without prejudice to Ebonyi State University and Related Matters (amendment) Law of 2011.
The South-East zonal office of the EFCC had in a letter dated October 4, 2012 and addressed to Idike demanded a list of all contracts/procurements (completed and ongoing) executed by the university from 2009 till date.
It also asked for copies of documents relating to advertisement, bidding, award and acceptance letters of all contracts during the period to aid its “investigation activities”.
But Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the governing council, Prof. Aja Nwachukwu, who spoke with reporters, denied that the council gave money to the EFCC or anyone to stop the probe.
The former Minister of Education said, “I have never heard about it and I can assure you this is not (Femi) Otedola versus (Farouk) Lawan case. We are transparent here; we would be very happy if anybody has evidence of that. Our bank accounts are all there. So, it is not an issue as far as I am concerned. I don’t have information about that.”
On the complaints by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, EBSU chapter, he said, “We run institutions based on instruments that created that institution.”
