Nigeria top-ranked player Clifford Enosoregbe and Christie Agugbom on Saturday emerged as champions in the men and women’s singles of the maiden Nigeria Ports Authority National Tennis Open in Abuja
Enosoregbe defeated hard-hitting Emmanuel Idoko 6-1, 6-4 in the men’s final to win the N300,000 cash prize in the category.
“I am happy and excited to have won here. It leaves me strong going to Kano where I also have a title to defend. If players can always move around this way (from Governor’s Cup to NPA Open to Dala Hard Court then to Tennis Masters), we will be better in our performance,” Enosoregbe said after he was presented the champion’s trophy.
Agugbom, on her part, survived a scare against Osareimen Airhunwunde, who surprisingly won the opening set 6-2 before the 2014 CBN Open queen rallied to win the match, beating her opponent in the second and third sets 6-2, 6-3 to pocket N300,000 and a trophy.
Nigeria Tennis Federation President, Sani Ndanusa, commended the NPA for the sponsorship of the championships, describing the partnership with the NTF as crucial in the drive for the development of tennis in Nigeria.
He said, “We are most grateful to our sponsors for giving us such an entertaining tournament. We believe that the youngsters who have emerged from this championship will maintain the tempo at subsequent events.”
