ABUJA – Pained by the public odium the investigations of their roles in the multi-billion contracts fraud in the Office of the National Security Office, ONSA, under the watch of the former NSA, Col, Sambo Dasuki (rtd), is bringing to them, some indicted senior officers in the military as well some top contractors in the country are currently plotting a hit at the current NSA, Major General Babagana Monguno.
Babagana MongunoInvestigations have revealed that most of the indicted individuals were extremely sad over the investigations and have resolved to discredit the office of the NSA.
It will be recalled that the Federal Government through a preliminary investigation implicated about 300 companies in an N116 billion contract fraud in the Office of the National Security Adviser during the last government.
The indicted companies according to the Presidential Committee were to refund N41 billion while investigating agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), were directed to determine whether another N75 billion should be recovered from some of the companies.
A presidency source who craved anonymity said that the grand plot was to launch an all-out campaign of calumny via paid adverts against the office and the person of the Mongonu.
According to investigations, the contractors felt they have lost so much money while the senior military officers felt that the NSA was using the unconventional ways to probe them, thereby “embarrassing” them.
The source said some top level military personnel were unhappy that most of the serving and retired military officers were being negatively affected by the way issues were being handled by the NSA.
The source stated that the aim of the negative campagians against the NSA “is to blackmail President Muhammadu Buhari into sacking the NSA from his job and halt the fraud investigations of security contracts”.
The source further stated: “Some officers both serving and retired are not happy with the way Gen. Monguno handled the issues of military personnel in the arms deal as well as the fraudulent contracts in his office by the previous regime.
“They believed that the NSA should have handled the issues in a military way and not the public embarrassment they are getting now. And I can tell you that they won’t stop at nothing to bring him down. These are very powerful people with influence and money.
Also speaking, another source said that no level of blackmail would deter the NSA.
“There is no amount of blackmail that will make Mr. President allow the sleaze that took place during the last government in the office of the NSA again happen. Let them go to any level to blackmail us or abuse us, it would no longer be business as usual,” he said.
The source noted that during the previous governments “there was a total disregard of key provisions of the Public Procurement Act in the award of contracts by ONSA”
He recalled that President Buhari was sad with what he met on the ground upon resumption of duty last year and said “no to what he met on ground. And when we went into the books, we found out that so much had been stolen by some people under the guise of contracts and so much was also misappropriated. So the president has vowed to clean up the place and that is exactly what we are doing with the ONSA contracts.”
He stressed the contractors and the military officers were not comfortable with the the Buhari government with the steps so far taken to recover all the stolen funds, saying the main reason why they were after the NSA.
“This is why they are attacking the NSA and by implication President Buhari. So many of those who have been made to refund different sums of money and are currently been prosecuted won’t stop at nothing to ensure that the name of the NSA and Mr President are dragged in the mud but I can assure you that they won’t succeed.
“Let them take the whole pages in the whole dallies in Nigeria to try to discredit the good work of Mr President. Nigerians know then and know better today,” the source added.
“The allegation against the NSA and panel and the call for the NSA’s resignation by some top business and government functionaries is nothing but a call to institute corruption. It is strange that the 2 individuals who they are calling to be relieved of their jobs are those spearheading Mr. President’s anti corruption crusade and the call for their removal is baseless and unfounded.
“All funds recovered have been remitted into the CBN account and therefore the issue of unauthorized use of recovered funds does not arise. This is a classic case of corruption fighting back and a time for Nigerians to call to question the legality of the call by these individuals and groups, for the removal of the 2 principal officers”, the source added.
