Interesting facts from Nigerian police uniform history: from green-grey to black-black

The look of the Nigerian police uniform largely depends on which division the policeman belongs to. Road workers have orange vests. VIO wear white shirts with black trousers. For ordinary city police, the shirt must be blue. MOPOL uses green-black suits. The black version seems most common but causes some discomfort in hot weather.

Nigerian police uniform history: from green-grey to black-black

Certain colours emphasize the authority of Nigerian policemen and indicate the duties that he/she performs. The strict and basic look is aimed at getting people to show attention and respect. Bright colors are used only when it is really necessary, for example, in the case of the traffic police or on certain holidays.

Many people remember the times when gray and green colors were used in Nigeria police form. At the time, it was believed that this structure was more disciplined. Green-gray is an immortal classic, instilling order. The clothes were starched, carefully ironed, so Nigerian police looked very smart, always ready for action to protect the interests of civilians.

During the reign of Ibrahim Babangida reforms concerning the outfits of the Nigeria police force workers were carried out. On 04.04.1988, an order was issued stating that a black-black version should be used.

Many critics expressed their opinions against this option. Years after the introduction of the changes many still believe that changing the clothes negatively influenced the effectiveness of the police officers in their jobs.

It is a mistake to consider the choice of police officer outfit solely on the basis of style. Clothes colours go a long way in portraying the character of the person wearing them. A good example is the red-black uniform of the football club "Milan". It is a sign of success, therefore every boy is eager to buy such t-shirts and shorts to play football in his backyard. This team is invincible each time it appears on the field in their traditional clothes. Can we say the same about the Nigerian police?

Is the uniform the problem?

Although, frankly speaking, police problems are not limited to the changing of colours. Another designer innovation is unlikely to make this organization completely humane, honest, effective, and friendly. Of course, properly selected clothing changes the perception of the police, but it is irrational to focus exclusively on it.

Much more attention should be paid to the imperfect labor and housing conditions, which has affected the lifestyle of policemen since the end of the colonial reign:

  • in many police premises, there are dirt and lice, making them extremely unsuitable for living;
  • the housing has not been reorganized since the time of the colonial masters;
  • centuries-old custom of order in law enforcement districts is no longer maintained;
  • the situation with service vehicles is also sad: they are beaten and are practically falling apart;
  • inadequate payments is another major obstacle that reduces the efficiency of the police. We have to agree that to risk your life in the fight against crime anyone would want to receive a decent reward to support himself and his family.

Considering these conditions, there is reasonable doubt that a beautiful suit can at least somehow improve the life of an ordinary policeman. Therefore, the reform of the police should not be limited to the uniform. It's not right to give it excessive attention when there are many other significant tasks.

Of course, this is a difficult work, but it is quite possible to cope with it if the government is determined. If these issues are sorted out, operational efficiency will increase. Let's hope that this will really happen and we will have a police force worthy of our pride.
