Nigerian army claims 106 suspects arrested, 26 guns recovered during Operation Python Dance

- The Nigerian army has ended the Operation Python Dance in the southeast

- 106 people were arrested for different offences while 26 guns were recovered

- 10,446 people excluding school children benefited from the army's free medical outreach

The Nigerian army, on Monday, October 16, announced that its troops arrested 106 persons and recovered 26 guns and some cartridges during the recently concluded Operation Python Dance in the southeast.

The army claimed that the criminal suspects arrested for various crime ranging from kidnapping, to armed robbery, and violent secession agitation have been handed over to the police for prosecution.

Recall that NAIJ.com reported that the army exercise which started on September 15, ended on October 14, amidst allegations that the army was involved in extra-judicial killings and molestation of members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, a recently proscribed group.

The Punch reports that the army's deputy director of public relations, Col. Sagir Musa, said despite the controversy raised by the army's presence in the southeast, crime has reduced drastically.

Musa said: “The one month Exercise Egwu Eke (Python Dance) II, conducted at the 82 Division’s area of responsibility, which covers the South-East geopolitical zone, helped in thwarting criminal activities such as illegal bunkering, armed robbery, kidnapping, violent secession agitations, banditry and communal clashes.

“So far, 106 suspects were arrested for different offences, in different areas across the South-East and all were handed over to the police in the various police commands across the region. In addition, 26 assorted arms and some quantities of cartridges were recovered.

“At the end of the Army exercise, available records from the Division’s Medical Hospital and Services indicated that 10,446 persons, excluding school pupils, benefited from the free medical outreaches conducted by the division.”

Villages that reportedly benefited from the free medical outreaches include: Isuokwaoto local government area of Abia state, which had 2,005 persons and Nkwaagu community, Abakaliki local government area, Ebonyi state, which had 1,401 persons.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that the law firm of Fein & DelValle PLLC has dragged President Muhammadu Buhari and chief of army staff, Lt General Tukur Buratai, to the International Criminal Court over treatment of Biafra agitators.

In a statement released over the weekend, the law firm said it was pursuing the case “on behalf of Biafrans who covet justice - the dead, the living, and those yet to be born.”

In the statement, the law firm accused President Buhari of ordering the mistreatment of unharmed Biafra agitators.
