By Chinedu Adonu

ENUGU—UNIVERSITY of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, UNTH, resident doctors, yesterday, marched round the hospital lamenting the decay in the hospital.

The doctors, who were also requesting for payment of September salary, February and March arrears, called for a change in management.

The doctors displayed placards with inscriptions such as ‘Pay us our salaries that was given to you;’ ‘UNTH management is anti-doctor’; ‘People are dying!’; ‘Patients are not being helped’ among others.

The leader of the protesting doctors and Acting President of the Association of Resident Doctors, ARD, UNTH chapter, Dr. Nwidenyi Isaiah, said the hospital is in a deplorable condition.

He added that the shortfall began last December and “continued through February and March last year. But there was an agreement with management that the remaining percentage of the salaries will be cleared within one month.”

He told newsmen that the Federal Government relea-sed money on September 27 to offset all arrears and pay September salaries.

A consultant intervenes

Reacting to the situation, a consultant, Dr. Obinna Onodugo, commended the doctors for conducting themselves in an orderly manner, while showing their grievances.

He informed them that he discussed with the CMD, Dr. Christopher Amah, last week where he promised to pay the salary last Friday, but failed as a result circumstances which needed immediate attention.

His words: “Your grievances are not only about salary, but the dilapidated nature of the facilities in the hospital. I will meet the management to discuss how to settle all these problems to restore the glory of UNTH.”

At press time, efforts to reach the CMD, Dr. Amah, for his reaction to the situation failed.
