A first class traditional ruler in Rivers, Leslie Eke, has called on the state government to invest in agriculture in order to create employment opportunities for the citizens.
Eke, Eze Gbakagbaka Eze Oha Evo III, made the call while speaking with newsmen on the sidelines of a public event in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.
He said that unemployment in the state could be reduced if concerted efforts were made to enhance agricultural production.
The Evo monarch further stated that apart from providing jobs, massive investment in agriculture would also accelerate the nation’s drive toward food sufficiency.
According to him, crime and violence will be reduced if agriculture is packaged to provide meaningful engagements for the youth.
‘‘The gains of investing in agriculture is massive, it will generate employment, boost food security as well as stimulate rural development.
‘‘Government just need to make agriculture attractive, this will make many to take advantage of the opportunities it provides,’’ he said.
