31% of Sokoto teachers unqualified —C’ttee

By Abdallah el-Kurebe

Sokoto —The needs assessment sub-committee of the committee on state of emergency on education established by Sokoto State government has disclosed that 31 percent of teachers in public schools were not qualified.

Part of the sub-committee’s recommendations, however, noted that the teachers were educated enough to be trained to enhance their qualifications to be in the classroom.

Chairman of the sub-committee, Dr. Shadi Sabeh, while presenting the report to Governor Aminu Tambuwal, yesterday, said 360 schools were assessed, adding that government should act to restructure the imbalance in teachers’ distribution, especially, between rural and urban areas.

The committee also recommended that additional 548 teachers be employed to achieve teacher/student ratio of 1:40, which is the standard set for public schools in the state.

“There is need to re-post 537 teachers from some schools that are over-staffed within the Sokoto metropolis to the many that are lacking teachers in rural areas,” the committee recommended.

In his remarks, Governor Tambuwal assured that the report would be implemented to ensure turn around in the fortunes of the sector, adding that a new training schedule would be drawn up by government to ensure all teachers were provided with opportunities for refresher courses.
