Sokoto targets 1.4m school enrollment

By Abdallah el-Kurebe

Sokoto State government has launched a 1.4 million school enrollment for the next school session.

Considered Nigeria’s largest school enrollment, the launch took place at Riji village, the birthplace of late Premier of Northern Nigeria, Sir Ahmadu Bello, which is in Rabah Local Government Area of the state.

Speaking at the event, Governor Aminu Tambuwal said his administration will turn around the fortunes of the education sector, adding that the campaign will primarily concentrate on community level activities, including house-to-house campaigns.

UNICEF’s Acting Chief of Field Officer for Sokoto, Zamfara and Kebbi, Mr. Paul Mudzondo, said the event was unique and historic because apart from campaign for enrollment, government had provided stipends to poor families to support enrollment and maintenance of children, especially girls, in schools.
