Hundreds of Boko Haram Islamists on Saturday invaded Gombe, firing heavy guns and throwing leaflets calling on residents to boycott the forthcoming general elections. The extremists reportedly stormed the city around 9:00 am and advanced without any resistance from the security forces.
The leaflet, which was written in Hausa, was signed by Jama’atu Ahlis Sunnah Lidda’ await Wal Jihad (loosely translated to mean People committed to the propagation of Sunnah and Jihad), also known as Boko Haram.
The message, written in Hausa, read, Anyone who submits himself to Islam should stay far away from the polling booth if he wants to live long, because we shall attack polling booths. Anyone who wants peace should stay away from helping security agents against us, and should stop waging war against us because we do not touch one unless he touches us.”
