Suspected Fulani Herdsmen reportedly stormed a gathering of mourners on Tuesday in Yangal village at Zango Kataf Local Government area of Kaduna State and killed eight people.

An Eyewitness who gave his name as Jonah Yohanna told Daily Independent that the fully armed assailants attacked the village at about 11.00pm as residents gathered to mourn the passing away of a neighbour.

Yohanna revealed that the gunmen opened fire on their victims, killing eight on the spot while 11 others were left with gunshot wounds.

“It has been our culture to mourn the departure of our loved ones. We gathered at the residence of the deceased throughout the night until the deceased is buried. It was one of these nights that the Fulani rustlers came and shot sporadically, killing our members,” Yohanna said.

He further hinted that although a distress call was immediately made to the police in the area, the security operatives did not show up until five hours later after the assailants have disappeared.

Confirming the tragedy, Chairman of the local council, Jonathan Asake, acknowledged that he received a distress call that Fulani rustlers have invaded the area, adding that when he got there, he saw the scene of the incident.

Asake revealed that he even assisted in transporting the deceased to a nearby hospital, St. Lovies Hospital, Zonkwa, which is about 16km from Yangal village.

“I got the distressed calls that Fulani rustlers attacked the villagers and that, eight person were killed while eleven others were seriously wounded. Immediately, I moved to the area where I assisted in carrying the dead and the injured inside my car even when the youths tried to attack me, accusing me of late arrival,” Asake said.

The council chairman further revealed that there have been several attacks by Fulani rustlers in the past and pleaded with the state government to come to their aide by providing them with adequate security to curb the herdsmen menace.

However, contrary to residents claim that the police arrived the area late, the state’s police command spokesman, said his men immediately responded when they heard of the incident, adding that it was even police that calmed the situation.

Recall that gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen reportedly left a community in Benue State in mourning and disarray after a fierce attack that led to the death of no fewer than 10 people.
