Displaced persons from villages in Mafa Local Government Area of Borno State, who were trapped following attacks by members of the Boko Haram sect on the area, have been evacuated to Maiduguri.
Chairman of Mafa Local Government Area, Alhaji Maina Lawan, who spoke to journalists yesterday in Maiduguri, said the people were evacuated to create space for troops to fight and secure surrounding villages.
“With the cover by the Nigerian troops, we visited Mafa town and assessed the damage done by the Boko Haram insurgents. During the visit, we discovered that the damage to government structures and residential buildings was not as bad as we though.
“We evacuated about 1000 people who were trapped in Mafa town, while fleeing from their villages and we have set up a camp for them in Maiduguri. We commend Governor Kashim Shettima for his support,” he said.
Chairman of Nganzai Local Government Area of Borno state, Malam Gana Badu, who visited Gajiram town, headquarters of the council, also spoke to newsmen.
He expressed shock over the level of destruction and appealed to the federal and state governments to come to their aid.
“I was informed by the troops that only one civilian was killed during the battle to recapture the area. All the residents have fled the town, but I was shocked to see that half of Gajiram town had been destroyed,” Badu said.
