Misuse of 2011 relief funds behind recent flood in Ibadan – PDP

Misuse of 2011 relief funds behind recent flood in Ibadan – PDP
The Oyo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), has declared that misuse of loans and donations received by Oyo State government after the 2011 flood that ravaged some parts of Ibadan led to the recent flood in the State.

The party said it was unfortunate that misuse of loans and relief material secured to construct damaged roads, bridges and dredging of rivers since 2011 flood caused another havoc that ravaged some parts of the ancient city last Tuesday.

PDP in a statement made available to journalists on Wednesday by its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Ismaila Asipa, while sympathising with the victims, observed that though, “huge amount of money were graciously donated and secured by the government after the 2011 flood, but nothing can be shown for the hugh amount of money secured”.

He said “I would like to recall the flooding of some years past, at the inception of the Ajimobi APC led administration in Oyo state, when flood also devastated almost all standing structures within Oyo state.

“I remembere that huge cash and relief materials were graciously donated to the government. The government also secured loans to open up blocked drainages and construct new bridges.

“To what extent and effect was the loans engaged. It was as if the Ajimobi led APC administration signed a pact with Yemoja, the river goddess. And the breaching of the Yemoja pact is the incessant flood in the state. It is time for the people of Oyo state, irrespective of religion, to stand up in prayers and call unto our Creator. May we never live to witness such flood disaster again”.

Asipa while appealing to journalists in the state to strike balance in their reportage noted that “you should always stand up to the defense of the masses, especially the emancipated workers and pensioners who are being denied their salaries.”

He used the opportunity to sympathize with those who were affected during the recent flood that raved some parts of Ibadan, the state capital.

“May I on behalf of our great party, the PDP, seize this opportunity to commiserate with the families of those who lost their properties and means of livelihoods to the recent flood reported throughout Oyo state especially, Ibadan and environs.

“Finally, I am appealing to the Oyo state government to come to the ai of the victims of the flood, more so when majority of those affected are public workers and pensioners who have not been paid their salaries since the beginning of year 2017.

“The Oyo state government is advised to expedite actions in dredging of blocked drainages, to raise bridges across streams where necessary, to ensure proper town planning of settlements along our water streams and to enforce strict environmental laws.”

But the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), through its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare challenged those making such insuniation to name donors and what they donated through the state government.

Sadare in his reaction mailed to DAILY POST said that the PDP should be aware that huge resources of the state were used to provide relief materials, reconstruction of damaged facilities and dredging of rivers in the state.

“We challenge those making such insuniation to name the donors as well as what were donated to the victims through the state government.

“As a matter of fact, huge resources of the state was deployed to the provision of relief materials, reconstruction of damaged facilities and dredging of streams and rivers across the state to prevent future recurrence.

“More so, the responsible manner in which the disaster was handled attracted global applause.

“Meanwhile, the remnants of the PDP in the state goofed if they believed that leveling unsubstantiated allegation against a performing government of Senator Abiola Ajimobi was the best way to come back to reckoning.

“They should be reminded that he who comes to equity must come with clean hands. A set of people that are synonymous with diversion and misappropriation of public funds would always think that everyone in power acts same.

“With the unending stories of sleaze and maladministration left behind by the PDP, no sane person can take them serious again even when they spend parts of their loots to publicize fake information”.
