This morning I boarded a commuter omnibus on my way to and from Bulawayo city centre. At about 07:31hours, the commuter omnibus was stopped at Nguboyenja fly over Roadblock.
The cop ordered the driver to park away from the cops.
The cops did not come to inspect the commuter omnibus for traffic offences. The conductor was given by the driver some money after which he rushed to where the cops were standing.
The conductor handed the money to one of the cops and returned to the commuter omnibus.
The conductor on arrival told the driver that the cops said the money was not enough.
I asked the driver what the money was for and he said the pay passage fee of $3 00 everyday.
He further stated that once the passage fee is paid, the cops won't ask for anything be it a driver's license.
What boggles my mind is that Charity Charamba recently said that all police officers were instructed to stop vehicles no far from the Roadblock site so that cops inspect the vehicles in full view of the public.
The police bosses know that there is rampant corruption at Roadblock sites but they seem to be reluctant to stop it.
I think it's better to completely do away with these roadblocks until at a time when the police are ready to do their work rather than to inconvenient the motoring public solely for the purpose of collecting money for their personal use.
