Could you have imagined that up until this time of writing, the African bad gyal Tiwa Savage had not dished out any single whatsoever in 2019?
Except for her maternity, we haven’t waited this long for a new song from Tiwa, the wait was getting too suspicious. It started feeling like some strings were being pulled behind the curtains for something grand to come through. The only time she showed up this year was with her ‘Fvck You’ cover which definitely caused a ruckus in the industry.
Albeit, last week, the ice was broken, the reason behind this seeming delay was made public. Tiwa Savage had graciously ended things with Mavin Records after putting pen to paper in a new recording deal with Universal Music Group.
Don Jazzy announcing mummy Jam Jam’s exit from Mavin Records was one of the finest moments on the music scene. A happy ending for both the artiste and record label.
It’s been seven years and Tiwa Savage kept a clean sheet with her erstwhile record label. In those years she had her high moments and a few low moments which we hope to highlight.
The journey for the pop diva through Mavin Records started back in 2012 when she signed with the Don Jazzy-led music imprint. At the moment the label was just starting out and she was the most promising female artist on the rave. She made a big hit with her collaboration with Don Jazzy on ‘Without My Heart’ in the same year she got on board.
In 2013 from joining the record label, Tiwa Savage exploited the good music chemistry with her former boss. She dropped another life-changing single ‘Eminado’ and followed the success of the single with an album, “Once Upon A Time’.
After the release of her long-awaited debut album, things happened really fast for Tiwa Savage between 2013 – 2015. She got engaged and traditionally married to her former manager Teebillz in 2013 while a while wedding in Dubai happened in 2014. Nearly a year later, Tiwa had her son Jamil in 2015 this period was a time of limbo for the singer as she was not physically present in the industry until December of the same year when she dropped her second studio album ‘R.E.D’.
After enjoying massive welcome with her ‘R.E.D’ album early in 2016, things went sideways on the marital front as her marriage with Teebillz crashed. She granted the infamous tell-all interview where she washed her dirty linen in public, carefully nailing Teebillz in the process.
A ray of hope for Tiwa in the same year came after she locked down a management and distribution deal with Roc Nation.
2017 started out good the 39-year-old singer as she performed at the ESSENCE ‘Black Women In Music’ official Grammy week event. Months later she made the list of artistes who performed at Jay Z’s ‘Made In America’ Music Tour. she was also listed among BBC’s 100 inspirational & Innovative Women. The ‘All Over’ crooner sealed a good run that year with her third body of work, an EP titled ‘Sugarcane’.
Reverting back to a failed marriage with Teebillz, Tiwa Savage filed for a divorce from her estranged husband in 2018. She also sparked rumours of an alleged romantic relationship with Wizkid, the climax of that was starring as the only video vixen on Wizkid’s ‘Fever‘ video. She also renewed her rivalry with Yemi Alade over ‘bum bum’ size and also unfollowing her on social media.
One of her best acts that year was selling out the prestigious 3,000 capacity Indigo O2 Arena in London, UK.
For the record, In November 2018, Savage won Best African Act at the 2018 MTV Europe Music Awards, becoming the first woman to win the category. A few weeks later she performed at the 2018 Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100, which took place at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Just when we thought Tiwa could do no wrong, Danny Young has accused Tiwa Savage of allegedly stealing his intellectual property for using
lyrics from his 2009 song ‘Oju Tiwon’ for her latest single ‘One’. Subsequently, YouTube took down the video briefly and restored it afterward.
Tiwa Savage’s stay at Mavin Records has been blissful without a dull moment. She has enjoyed several endorsement deals from MTN, Pepsi, Forte Oil, Pampers, recently Star etc. Her high points sure exceeded her lows at the label, she is one female artiste that has closed the male between male and female achievement in the industry. She has not only inspired those at her former label but her other female colleagues especially surmounting her marital troubles and keeping the crown as the queen of Nigerian music and Africa at large.
Just like her former boss, we hope she soars higher with her new platform and shatter glass ceilings as they come.
