Jaguda Artiste Of The Month: Davido, 9 Years A King

alt

Our Jaguda Artiste of the Month for May is the ever hardworking leader of the 30BG crew and DMW, David Adedeji Adeleke also known as Davido

The month of May has been an amazing month for the Davido despite having to go months without having an outdoor concert due to the global pandemic COVID-19. He still managed to set some new historic records with African music while sitting at home and amazing is the least way to describe the feeling this inspires.

Dropped my first song 9 years .. That’s crazy ! Next year we celebrate 10 years ! Trust it to be a carnival!!

— Davido (@davido) May 8, 2020

All the good things seem to happen within the same space of time for Omo baba olowo. About 9 years ago in May, the Atlanta-born Nigerian singer dropped his debut track ‘Back When‘ with rapper Naeto C. In his usual way the singer took a trip down memory lane with a to celebrate how far he has come. Being on top and in the top two brackets after 9 years is no mean feat for anyone. It is, in fact, insane, considering how stiff the competition in the music industry can be, staying on top is never guaranteed. It has been an upward and forward journey for him with awards, endorsements and the other good stuff that comes along.

If you ever work as hard Davido, it is inevitable that you would perhaps go has far he has been able to reach. To mark his 9 years as an artiste, the universe conspired to reward his hard work in May. Some things started to add up nicely and it all started to make sense.

Finally, his biggest career tune, ‘Fall’ cracked the American music with hard evidence to show for it. Those plaques from RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) started rolling in.

RIAA Canada officially certified Davido’s smash hit attained a Gold status after it sold over 40,000 units in the country.

While the artiste was yet celebrating his RIAA Gold certification in Canada, popular American entertainment and music charting brand Billboard published a new issue that had the music star gracing it cover page. Davido alongside Tiwa Savage and Mr Eazi had another shot to talk about Afrobeats and the growing movement with folks from Billboard.

Then came the big one, ‘Fall’ went Gold after selling over 500,000 units in the United States as certified by RIAA. This singular feat makes Davido the only Nigerian artiste to get a gold RIAA certification for their song, it may have taken nearly three years but it’s damn worth it. In the coming months, he would bag his second Gold RIAA certification for ‘If’ as the record currently has sold over 430,000 units.

Most times people tend to hinge Davido’s success as a musician to the fact that he has a billionaire father who probably rigged the game for him with his money. That rhetoric is baseless as it’s insulting. The ‘Dami Duro’ crooner works damn hard for his achievements to be waved away as a rich kid privilege or perhaps something that was bought. Everything the musician enjoys today he sure earned every penny of it.

The DMW boss has a long history of turning sawdust to gold. He has been able to rework some low-energy tunes to his personal smash hits. His energy, enthusiasm and smooth delivery are almost unrivalled in the industry.

Being on top of one’s game for 9 years with the volatile nature of the music industry is no mean feat and shouldn’t be trampled upon with senseless snide remarks. Davido has been king for 9 years, he has achieved a lot and put Nigerian music on the map and deserves all the respect.

One of his most inspiring character has to be that he stays hungry for success like an up-and-coming music act.
