What Will Become Of Laycon After Big Brother Naija?

Laycon should learn a thing or two from former BBNaija winner Efe when he steps outside the house.

Olamilekan Agbeleshe popularly known as Laycon is the most talked about personality in Nigeria for the past 70 days. The Big Brother Naija Lockdown Season 5 housemate has garnered the biggest fan base unlike any of his other co-housemates. The strata of his supporters cut across the average Nigerian on the street, lower middle, Nigerian celebrities and musicians.

From his first day in the house, the love for Laycon has been massive with his fan base getting bigger with each passing day. His fans have been so invested in the show to ensure that he wins the prize money of N85 million on day 71.

I have especially loved the way Nigerian musicians have thrown their weight behind the 26-year-old rapper and reality TV star. The list of industry colleagues supporting Laycon is pretty long from Reminisce, Chinko Ekun, Teni, Samklef, DJ Kaywise etc. Even evicted housemates have endorsed Laycon as the winner of the show. With all the votes and support system he enjoys there isn’t any doubt Ebuka would announce the lanky rapper as the eventual winner of Big Brother Naija Lockdown Season 5.

A new life awaits Laycon when he exits the house as the winner of BBNaija season 5. He is already a lot bigger on the streets than he was a few months ago before participating in the reality TV show. His social media pages have grown geometrically; over 1.2 million followers on Instagram, over 100K on Twitter and his music has also enjoyed increased streams during this period. In the famous lyrics of Naeto C, ‘Levels don change now. They no fit hold me again now I am ten over ten’.

The most important question on my mind is what would become of Laycon after BBNaija?

So far the ‘Fierce’ crooner has been living in a controlled environment which is very different from the reality that awaits him when he comes out.

I like the fact that lots of Nigerians, celebrities have supported Laycon to emerge, winner of BBNaija Lockdown, he would need their support even more outside the house.

Primarily Laycon is a musician, a rapper, and definitely, he would be returning to making music. Would these legions of supporters remain loyal to him?

The fact that Laycon enjoys the support of fellow Nigerian musicians while in the house might not be exactly what he would have when he is out because the industry is a jungle. I perceive many others are just waiting to feed off his buzz ‘as e dey hot’. How many industry colleagues would be willing to collaborate with Laycon long after the BBNaija buzz wanes?

I’m pretty certain a harsh reality awaits him in the Nigerian music industry.

Fans have been voting fervently to ensure Laycon wins the reality TV show. Would these fans transfer same fervour into buying and streaming his new music after the house? The biggest challenge Laycon would have to face is transmuting his fan base from mere reality TV supporters to loyal music-buying fans and PR machines.

I think Laycon has to learn a thing or two from Efe previous winner of Big Brother Naija season 2. He has to exploit his BBNaija fame and flip it seamlessly into being a proper Nigerian music star with a bag of hit songs. It would be great to see him perform his songs at the next Big Brother Naija, unlike Efe who never had a chance because he never had any hit song.

History has not been kind to anyone who came into Big Brother Naija with the hope of bettering their music career after the reality show like Cocoice, Efe, Teddy A, Jon Ogah,  Debbie-Rise. It would be unfortunate if Laycon slips into that mould of artistes who failed to use their BBNaija fame to bolster their music careers.

Laycon should not get caught up in the fake love shared in the Nigerian music industry, because he is only getting started.
