Two in court for allegedly stealing N280,000





Ojo Taiye, 18, and Lukemam Jimoh, 25, on Friday appeared in Egor Magistrates’ Court in Benin, for allegedly stealing the sum of N280,000.

The defendants are facing trial for conspiracy, stealing and obstructing Justice.

The Police Prosecution, Insp. Lucky Sunday, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on Feb. 2, and June 2019 at No 2, Akoda street, Evbuotubu Quarters, Egor Local Government Area of Edo State.

Sunday alleged that Taiye did conspire to steal the sum of N280,000 from Mr Joseph Peter.

He alleged that Jimoh sometimes in the month of June last year, at Peter Bakery, same address did conspire with one Azeez Mohammed to obstruct , prevent, pervert, and defeat the cause of Justice by failing to produce Mohammed he guaranteed as manager to the police.

The prosecutor said the offences contravened the provisions of sections 516, 390(9) and 126(1) of the Criminal Code Cap. 48 Vol. 11, Laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria, 1976, now applicable in Edo which prescribes seven years jail term each, if found guilty.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Magistrate, Aiyanyo Blessing admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum each, adding that the surety must be gainfully employed in a recognized establishment and adjourned the case until Feb. 27 for further hearing.
