The Niger State lnter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has rated Governor Abubakar Sani Bello high for respecting the rule of law by swearing in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate as chairman of Magama Local Government Area.
This, it stated, was against the position of his party, the All Progressive Congress, APC.
Giving the commendation in an interview in Minna, the state chairman of IPAC, Mamman Damisa said Bello’s action not only showed that he has respect for the rule of law but desires that the nations’ democracy thrives.
The Governor had acted on the ruling of a Minna high court that gave the chairmanship seat to PDP candidate Sufyanu Yahaya and sworn him in, even as the APC said the ruling was being contested at the appeal court and that status quo be maintained.
“The Governor has displayed rare respect for the court ruling even as he was in a position to do contrary to favour his political party APC, he refused to do so but took the path of honour by respecting a court ruling.
“His action is highly commendable, we are confident that notwithstanding political affiliations, the governor will always act right by allowing the people’s will and rule of law to prevail over any other considerations,” the state IPAC chairman stated.
He stated that with that singular act, the council has resolved to formally visit the Governor to express its gratitude profoundly for guiding Niger State through the path of true democracy.
Damisa further added, ” it is exemplary, it gives us confidence that when we win elections we will not be robbed. The Governor has brought sanity to local government elections in the state and has strengthened democracy thus deserved special recognition for his action to restore people’s hope.”
Speaking, the Chairman of APGA Niger State, Musa Liman Maikifi recalled that when his party won the councilorship seat in Kontagora, the immediate constituency of the Governor, he insisted that the people be allowed to prevail.
Also, the PDM chairman in the state, Musa Adamu Nasko said the action of the governor will improve democratic culture in the state and should be commended.
