Yobe: Flash flood hits Gashua town, submerges several houses after heavy rains

Residents of Gashu’a town, the headquarters of Bade local government area of Yobe State have borne the brunt of the recent flash flood which rendered many homeless.

It was learned that most parts of the town are battling with deplorable road infrastructure and lack of drainage systems that can facilitate the flow of water whenever it rains.

A resident of the town, Mohammed Isah lamented that the heavy downpour of last Sunday flooded the community, leaving residual water lying around homes and feeding a malaria epidemic.

“This has been the scenario for years, poor, clogged and insufficient drainage systems have made Gashu’a and other towns of Yobe like Nguru susceptible to flooding.

“Many parts of the community are now inaccessible while the raining season is approaching its peak”.

Nazifi Gashua described the situation as disturbing considering the calibre of people that Gashua town has produced who are now ‘alphas and omegas’ at both state and federal level.

He then called on the government as well as political leaders from the community to find a lasting solution to the menace to avert the destruction of lives and property annually.

Other residents who did not want their names to be published also decried that now they can no longer sleep with their eyes closed during night rain because of fear of flood that often destroys their homes.
