Ayade urged to probe Ukele crisis

By Emma Una
CALABAR – Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State has been called upon to set up a panel of inquiry into the communal conflict in North Ukele, which claimed over 150 lives, with about 1,756 houses destroyed, in June.

The group, Wanikade Professionals, in a communiqué by the Secretary, Miss Blessing Ikade, weekend, after a meeting in Okuku, Yala Local Government Area of the state, said the panel of inquiry was necessary to forestall further occurrence of an incident of such magnitude in the area.

According to Wanikade Professionals, the two communities had lived together and enjoyed common bonds such as marriages, traditional norms and dialect for hundreds of years and for a sudden change of attitude that led to such destruction, it was important to establish what happened, to find lasting solution to the crisis.

The group thanked Governor Ayade, Senator Rose Oko, Jarigbe Agom and the Federal Government for their prompt response to restoring peace to the feuding communities and assisting those displaced with relief materials.
