CAN condemns celebrities' performances in churches

- The Christian Association of Nigeria has condemned performances by comedians and celebrities in churches

- CAN said such performances can only distract worshipers from external race

- The association urged the church to continue to impart the world and not learning from the world

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has condemned the continued invitation of comedians and other entertainers in churches, Premium Times reports.

The association said the invitations handed the celebrities are usually given to boost attendance of members in churches.

The general secretary of CAN, Musa Asake, said the new trend would only succeed in distracting worshipers from the teaching of Christ.

Asake said the churches now learn from the world rather imparting positively on the world.

He said it has become common for churches to publicise programme and printing of massive billboards and circulate posters and fliers to announce visitation by the celebrities.

Asake said: "If the church has gotten to a place where it is making adverts like the world, then we are in trouble.

"The church is a serious place where we go to worship, not where we go for entertainment. In my personal opinion, I don’t support it because this will only divert the attention of people from Christ to human beings which is not supposed to be so."

He noted that the invitation of these artistes, worshipers could distract worshipers from focusing on the salvation and walk with Christ.

He said: "Once the church gets to that level, we are trying to side-track ourselves from the gospel message to a worldly kind of entertainment, which is not supposed to be so.”
