We need state police to tackle Nigeria's security challenges - Osinbajo's aide

- The federal government has said that it will seek the consent and support of state governors on the push for the creation of state police

- Laolu Akande, the media aide to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, stated that the consent of state governments was necessary especially in the area of constitutional amendment for the proposal

- Akande said that creating state police is important in tackling security issues in the country

The federal government on Saturday, February 17, said it would seek the support of governors and the National Assembly on the issue of creating state police across the country.

Laolu Akande, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s media aide, stated that their support is vital to allow for constitutional amendments. He said that the key aim of establishing state police was to tackle the country’s many security issues.

In his conversation with The Punch, Akande said: “We have advocated for state police and it is gathering quite a bit of groundswell. As it gets widespread support, especially among the state governments and the National Assembly, we will be able to achieve the necessary constitutional amendments.

“For now, the main focus is to expand the implementation of community policing, which is to achieve virtually the same purpose of police personnel being very familiar with and working in close association with their local communities. As you know, there is already a presidential order issued for community policing to begin.”

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com reported that the chairman of the Lagos chapter of the National Conscience Party (NCP), Fatai Ibu-Owo, had expressed opposition to the creation of state police, stating that the country is not politically mature enough for such development.

In an interview on Saturday, February 17, Ibu-Owo said Nigeria is not politically ready for such concept due to the “desperation of politicians.”
