Wastes have taken over Lagos homes and streets - Community leaders cry out

- Community leaders in Lagos mainland appealed to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to intervene in the waste crisis currently witnessed in the state

- They appealed to Governor Ambode to bring back the local PSP waste operators

- They said the new company brought by the governor is not effectively handling the waste collection

Community leaders from across the mainland area of Lagos have called on the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to urgently intervene in the ongoing misunderstanding between the local PSP waste operators and the Lagos state government to save Lagos from imminent waste disaster.

The community leaders, under the aegis of Community Development Associations (CDA) from across the Mainland, Lagos, said they cannot keep silent again as people are choking from piles of wastes in their homes and streets, Vanguard reports.

They said that without urgent intervention, the state would face disastrous health consequences from built-up wastes in homes, drainage channels and streets.

NAIJ.com gathered that the community attributed the current waste crisis to the decision of the present government to stop the PSP operators from the domestic waste collection.

Read their statement: “We are faced with the possible twin problem of massive flooding and outbreak of diseases with current situation in Lagos. The waste dumps that once lived with us until the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration came and battled strenuously to consign them to history are again sprouting all over the place.

“As community leaders, our people are asking questions but we are unable to give them satisfactory reasons we have to return to this path. We were paying the waste operators, we didn’t complain and they were coming to remove the waste from house to house. Our environment was clean and tidy, then we decided to change a winning team, knowing that if you make such a change mid-way, what you get is what we are experiencing now. Our environment is fast deteriorating, it is clear now that the new company His Excellency, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, has brought to replace the PSP operators, who were deployed to manage domestic waste collection from ward to ward, cannot effectively cope with the collection of the huge volume of waste daily generated across Lagos.

“We appeal, therefore, that Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu, known for his undiluted love for the people of Lagos, intervenes and prevails on Governor Ambode to kindly overlook whatever wrong the PSP operators may have done in the interest of the people, temper justice with mercy and find a way to bring them back to work side by side and hand in hand with the new waste managers to take Lagos out of the looming waste disaster.”

NAIJ.com previously reported that Governor Ambode banned all cash payment to civil servants in revenue collection across the state with effect from March 1, 2018.

The governor issued the ban order on Monday, February 19, after paying his Land Use Charge at the Opebi branch of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), Ikeja, Lagos, in the presence of top management staff of the bank.

He said the measure is aimed at improving on service delivery to residents of the state and to block revenue leakages.
