Anti-restructuring elements in Nigeria are actually laying the foundation for disintegration - Ezeife

- Chukwuemeka Ezeife warns those against restructuring to be mindful that they are not doing Nigerian any good

Ezeife says the calls for restructuring will save Nigeria and that the APC also understands it

- He says opposition to restructuring means preferring what does not work in the country

Former governor of Anambra state, Chukwuemeka Ezeife, has cautioned Nigerians who are against the restructuring of the country saying they should not remain myopic or continue to lay the foundation for disintegration.

The Punch reports that Ezeife said this when he made a presentation at the ongoing third annual political summit organised by Save Democracy Africa, in Abuja, on Tuesday , March 20.

Ezeife said he was moved to make his stand known in reactions to comments credited to Professor Ango Abdullahi recently.

The report quoted Abdullahi as saying: “We have all personalised restructuring with a view to targeting a section of the country and this is the area that we feel very sensitive about and we will resist it. Even if we don’t resist it objectively, we can resist it politically.”

In his reaction, Ezeife reportedly said Abdullahi’s position was contrary to that of the Governor Nasir El-Rufai-led All Progressives Congress panel on true federation.

“I should appeal to the myopic opponents of restructuring to think again, they should consider the long-term interest of the nation.

“If the North-West follows the prescription of Ango Abdullahi, (Gideon) Orkar’s Nigeria becomes inevitable but all nationalists must keep the doors open for those who break away to come back. It is infinitely better to think constructively to avoid the early exit.

“Opposition to restructuring is opposition to ending what led to the civil war. Such opposition is mainly from the North whose sons were the military leaders of Nigeria who ruled and ruined post-1966 Nigeria.

“Opposition to restructuring is to prefer what does not work over what works. The World Bank had confirmed that Nigeria’s agreed structure worked thus opposition to restructuring is calling for a permanence of gross unfairness.

“In substance, restructuring calls for going back to the agreed Nigeria, that Nigeria agreed by our founding fathers,” he said.

NAIJ.com earlier reported that the speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, expressed support for auditing and restructuring the existing federal system to give a sense of belonging to all Nigerians.

Dogara said this on Monday, March 19, in Abuja at the third annual Political Summit on, ‘Reforming the Nigerian Federation: Which Way Forward,’ organised by the Save Democracy Africa.
