God, help; Nigerians are hungry more than ever before – CAN leader

Mathias Echioda

The Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Niger State Chapter, Rev. Mathias Echioda, says the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has failed Nigerians.

Echioda scored the regime low on its three-point agenda: Security, anti-corruption and economy, saying “there is nothing to write home about on the three issues”.

He said, “Talking about the economy side of it, when things change for the better, the ordinary person sees it because it shows. But so far, Nigerians are hungry more than ever before; we have unemployment more than ever before.

“So far, I do not really know the economic policy we are working with in this country. I am also feeling the pain and the situation has clearly brought the popular adage of ‘the rich also cry’ to manifestation. Economically, if a system is working, everyone knows; if it is working, everyone feels it, everyone experiences it and everyone celebrates it; and if it is not, everyone also knows.

“On corruption, there seems to be a fight but the fight is selective because if you are a sinner and you belonged to another party and you defect to the ruling party, your sins are forgiven and you become an angel. So, it is like a thief changing his name. Even when they say money has been recovered, we don’t know where the money is going to.

“On security, think about this fundamentally: You have about 400, 000 policemen to police over 180 million people and of the 400, 000 policemen, over 100, 000 are guarding privileged Nigerians. So who is the protection ordinary Nigerians?

“Now you have herdsmen terrorism apart from Boko Haram terrorism. You also have abduction all over the country.

“The ordinary Nigerian cannot sleep with his two eyes closed yet the primary responsibility of a government is to secure the citizens.

“The truth is that I do not see any security because Nigerians now rely on divine security rather than the one provided by this government”.

On his advice to the Buhari administration in the face of the challenges in the country, the CAN leader said it should wake up and keep its electioneering promises.

“Government should fix the economy by engaging more competent hands while stop acting in a selective manner on the fight against corruption. In essence, the administration should stop doing window-dressing on the three areas it promised to make change in the lives of the people”, he said.

“Let them give jobs to the young ones. And my concern is why government is running away from restructuring. I do not know why the government of the nation should not be in the hands of the people. I do not know why some privileged people lord over the other people always. I don’t know why we cannot be objective enough that it is not always from group A that we have the people who have the answers. Nigeria belongs to all of us and I do not know why we cannot trust a section of a country because of our little mindedness and whoever would be a tribal leader should not be national leader. My understanding is that unless there is ‘change’ which is not a political slogan but genuine change, there is no hope for the country”.
