As the world mourns Kofi Annan, here are 10 major facts to know about the late ex-UN chief





Many world leaders have expressed shock and sadness over the demise of Kofi Annan, a global diplomat and former secretary general of the United Nations (UN).

In Ghana, just like in Nigeria, the country’s president, Nana Akufo-Addo, reportedly paid tribute to the late Kofi Annan after his passing in Switzerland at the age of 80. He directed the country’s national flag to fly at half-mast across the country in honour of the deceased.

President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria called Nana Akufo-Addo from London and said all Nigerians and ECOWAS member countries share in the deep loss of the former UN scribe.

Also Goodluck Jonathan, a former president, on Saturday, August 18, described late Kofi Annan, a former secretary general of the United Nations (UN), as one who managed contending powers in the international organisation.

Yen quoted Joy News as revealing 10 facts about the late Annan. Read below:

1. He was born in Kumasi.

2. He grew up in Fanti New Town and Asokwa bungalow.

3. His dad was a former Ashanti regional minister.

4. He attended Asem Boys and KNUST.

5. He was staunch Kotoko FC fan.

6. His title Busumburu was conferred on him by Manhyia Palace.

7. As the UN Secretary General, he once visited iconic political activist Baffour Akoto at Asokwa bungalow in 2001.

8. Through assistance he sought from Kumasi Traditional Council.the long chieftaincy feud in Akwamu was brought to an end.
