What do you know about the coldest place in Nigeria? Would you be able to point it out on the map? How cold do you think it could get? If you have no clue and you are curious to find out, then you have come to the right place. In this article, we will tell you about the land that does not abide by the rules of Nigeria climate.
Where is the coldest place in Nigeria?
Nigeria weather could be characterised as quite warm, as it mostly has tropical savannah climate. Of course, some of the marginal regions might deviate from the mean numbers of the whole country, but not by much. That is why we were quite surprised to find one little yet significant cold spot on the map.
Almost in the very middle of Nigeria sits a place that sticks out like a sore thumb when it comes to the weather. That place is none other than Jos Plateau state and the city of Jos in particular.
But what makes it so special? And how can it be in the heart of the country? Well, it seems that the rules of Nigeria temperature do not work on Jos because it is so high up. Due to the fact that it stands at 1,238 metres above sea level, the weather in Jos is noticeably colder than in the other regions of the country. Let’s talk about the temperature of this area in a little more detail.

While the rest of Nigeria enjoys warm weather all year round with average temperatures ranging from 25 to 30 °C, thermometers in Jos rarely go above 23 °C, if only during spring, when they might rise slightly higher than 25 °C.
Moreover, out of all places in the country, Jos is the only place where the temperature can drop as low as 11 °C (usually the lowest temperature is around 13 °C). If you have never been to Nigeria and this does not seem that impressive to you, consider the fact that most other places in the region rarely see the temperature drop to 21 °C.
Of course, places in the south of the country with hotter climates might see the drops of temperature to around 13 °C, but they are much warmer overall, which makes Jos an indisputable winner when it comes to being the coldest spot on Nigeria’s temperature map.
As most Nigerians have to deal with moderate to extreme heat on daily basis, Jos has become a rather popular destination for people who just want to relax and enjoy the cool weather, as well as the gorgeous sights. As a matter of fact, J-Town is known as the ‘home of peace and tourism’. Thus, if you are looking for a lovely place with beautiful rocky mountains and pleasant temperatures, Jos is the place to go.
Now, even though Jos is not even among the top 100 coldest places in the world, it is cold enough to be the coldest city in Nigeria. Have you ever been to J-Town? Is it too cold for you? Or is it not cold enough? Let us know in the comments.
