Politicians are the ones behind banditry - Ex-police chief says

- Ex-Lagos state police chief Abubakar Tsav says politicians are behind bandit attacks across Nigeria

- Tsav also noted that corruption and smuggled arms coming through porous borders also aided the increase in bandit attacks

- The former commisioner of police argued that devoting time to monitoring activities of politicians and employing more security personnel would go along way to reduce banditry

A former commissioner of police in Lagos state, Abubakar Tsav, has accused politicians of being responsible for activities of bandits across the country.

The ex-police chief told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday, August 13 in Makurdi, the Benue state capital, that banditry and most insecurities occurring in the country were created by politicians.

He argued that if the police hierarchy turned full attention to politicians, it would catch them in the act of organising the banditry attacks.

He said: “Banditry and insecurity are created by politicians and the politicians know who the bandits are. They know why these people are doing this.

“I want to appeal to our political class to have a change of heart and cooperate with security agencies to reduce criminality in the land.

“If the police are courageous enough to search houses and monitor activities of politicians, you will see what they will recover from them.”

Tsav also fingered high level of corruption and porous borders that allowed smuggling of arms into the country as part of the problem.

The solution, Tsav said, is for the federal government to recruit of security personnel to get unemployed youths off the streets.

Tsav said: “In the police service, for instance, we have few policemen and most of them are attached to politicians. In fact, the government should reduce salary of the legislature to fund the new intake.

“It is dangerous to attach a police officer to stay with a politician for more than two years because the moment they stay long with them they become very loyal to them instead of the Nigeria police force."

In a similar vein, Legit.ng earlier reported that Tsav, on Saturday, August 10, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to attach spies to all public officers to mitigate corruption in Nigeria.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted Tsav as saying in Makurdi that the federal government should urgently stop security personnel from working with public officers beyond two years.

Tsav said the first way to fight corruption is to ensure regular redeployment of officers attached to public officers and attachment of spies to checkmate their activities.
