- President Muhammadu Buhari has revealed the calibre APC members who will become the next set of state chairmen
- Buhari said that such persons must have solid bases with total support from all levels
- The president said that this is in line with the party's new bottom-to-top approach in electing new state leaders of the APC
President Muhammadu Buhari has raised the stakes for members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who have the ambition of occupying elective positions.
Speaking to all 36 state chairmen of the APC who paid him a courtesy visit at State House, Abuja, on Friday, December 6, President Buhari said the bottom-to-top approach will be used for those among them who seek to be re-elected.
In his explanation of the strategy, the president said that it requires that the prospective candidates must possess solid bases from the grassroots to national levels as one of the necessary criteria.
He further said that this approach, if followed, will prove to Nigerians that those who finally emerge as state chairmen of the ruling party have the support of their individual constituencies at all levels.
The president told the state chairmen: "Your election will soon hold and I am going to take personal interest to make sure that the bottom-to-top is maintained and people are elected by their immediate and subsequent constituencies.
"In Abuja we want to deal with people who have a solid base from where they come."
On his part, the national chairmen of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole, said that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the ruling party has decided to support the chairmen financially on a monthly basis to help them with their enormous responsibilities.
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the president had a closed-door meeting with governors of the APC at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), and the chief of staff to the president, Mallam Abba Kyari, were also in the meeting with the president and governors.
