Bayelsa: Fear grips PDP, Dickson as party leaders beg Timi Alaibe to drop suit against Diri

- The PDP has started making moves to beg Timi Alaibe to drop his suit against the candidacy of the new governor of Bayelsa, Douye Diri

- Alaibe, after losing the party's governorship ticket to Diri, alleged irregularities and went to court to challenge the primaries

- The party is afraid that the tenure of Diri may be truncated, just like that of APC's Lyon, if Alaibe wins the suit

The Peoples Democratic Party has reportedly started making moves to beg Timi Alaibe to withdraw his suit against the candidacy of Governor Douye Diri.

The move is to ensure that Governor Diri does not suffer the same fate that befell David Lyon of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Lyon won the Bayelsa state governorship election but got sacked because his deputy presented false information to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Alaibe, shortly after the PDP's primaries, alleged irregularities and dragged his party and Governor Diri to court.

The governorship aspirant who reportedly had the backing of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan wants the court to nullify Diri's candidacy and declare him the validly nominated governorship candidate of the party.

Legit.ng notes that the PDP did not really pay serious attention to the suit by Alaibe since it lost the governorship election.

However, after the Supreme Court judgement which made Diri the state governor, chieftains of the party, including Seriake Dickson, had started running around to beg Alaibe.

Alaibe is believed to have a strong case which may see Diri suffering a similar fate as APC's Lyon. The matter is still pending before the Federal High Court and hearing may resume soon.

Sources who spoke to The Nation said ex-Governor Dickson has released some of his mistakes and he is leaving no stone unturned to ensure total reconciliation.

The former governor has reportedly asked his supporters, including the new governor to start making efforts to make peace return to the party.

Meanwhile, apparently as part of the reconciliation move, Diri accompanied by Dickson and the national chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, have gone to see Jonathan, shortly after the inauguration.

The move is reportedly to beg Jonathan to prevail on Alaibe to drop his suit against Diri.

Speaking after the meeting with Jonathan, Governor Diri said it was the first step taken towards restoring peace in the heavily divided party and Bayelsa state in general.

He said his mission is to reconcile and ensure that all key stakeholders are carried along.

The new Bayelsa state governor said his administration will work on bringing an agenda to unite the people of the state, irrespective of party affiliations.

He said: “We need an agenda that will bring Bayelsa’s people together; unite them as one people who will pursue the development of Bayelsa as one people, whether in PDP, APC or any other political party.

“We have been elected as governors not only of PDP, but of Bayelsa state. Therefore, every political party, everybody in Bayelsa will feel a stake and we have to tap do the knowledge of those who have been in governance."

Governor Diri said his reconciliation train will not stop at Jonathan's house as he will meet with all other leaders in the state in his pursuit of peace and unity.

Similarly, the national chairman of the PDP, Secondus, suggested what the Bayelsa chapter of the party should do next to promote peace in the state.

According to him, the PDP should set up a reconciliation committee to reunite all aggrieved members of the party who had scores to settle after the last governorship election in Bayelsa.

The PDP chairman added that this move will no doubt, return peace not just for the party, but also for the entire people of Bayelsa.
