Barcelona captain Lionel Messi has emerged joint 'Best Sportsman of the Year' alongside Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton at the 2020 Laureus Award gala which took place in Germany.
The 32-year-old forward became the first-ever footballer to have won the prestigious prize having polled the same number of votes with the English man.
According to information on Barca's official website, it was also the first time the category would witness a tie - which led the organisers to reward the emerging winners with the award.

Messi beat off competition from the likes of Rafael Nadal, Marc Márquez, marathoner Eliud Kipchoge, and golf legend Tiger Woods to succeed Novak Djokovic.
The gong wraps up an impressive 2019 for the Argentine star having won the Golden Shoe, Ballon d'Or, FIFA The Best, and the Pichichi trophies.
So far this campaign, Messi already leading the chase for the Spanish top scorer award with 14 goals after 19 matches - one better than Real Madrid's Karim Benzema who has played more games.

The 32-year-old was not on target for the Catalans in their slim victory over Getafe last weekend, he assisted Antoine Griezmann's opening goal in the match.
Legit.ng earlier reported that Barcelona defeated visiting Getafe 2-1 on Saturday afternoon, February 15, with Messi getting superb game.
