More trouble for Mourinho as German club set to dump Tottenham out of Champions League

- Tottenham vs RB Leipzig's Champions League clash ended in tears for Spurs

- Timo Werner scored the only goal in the first leg of their round of 16 clash

- Spurs will have to step their game to overturn the result in the second leg next month

Timo Werner's lone strike from the spot in the 58th minute was all Bundesliga club RB Leipzig needed to stun Tottenham Hotspur at their new Stadium on Wednesday night.

The 23-year-old German forward carefully stepped up to bury the ball into the bottom left corner of the post after Ben Davies fouled Konrad Laimer in his side's danger zone.

This, however, means that Jose Mourinho and his Spurs armies might be dumped out of the championship at the round of 16 stage if they fail to turn the result around in the second leg.

The visitors started the game on a bright note after creating three begging opportunities in the first two minutes but their failure to convert those chances left them scoreless in the earlier in the fixture.

Mourinho fielded Lucas Moura upfront in the absence of his captain Harry Kane while Heung-min Son recently joined the England star on the sidelines.

The visitors were presented with another stunning chance int he 35th minute but Werner's shot went straight into Hugo Lloris' safe hands as both sides finished the half without finding the back of the net.

With just 13 minutes into the second half, Werner powered home a spot-kick which was almost saved by Spurs goalkeeper only that the ball was faster.

Giovani Lo Celso almost leveled parity for the home team but the Argentine's effort failed to reach its target.

Moments after which Patrik Schick also fumbled the opportunity given to him to double the visitors' lead towards the end of the meeting.

For Spurs to progress to the next stage, they must score at least two unreplied goals to overturn the result of tonight's match.

The Premier League victory for City came just days after they were slapped with a two-year ban from Champions League for violating Financial Fair Play rules.

However, the Citizens appeared to have put those woes behind them, with Kevin De Bruyne and Rodrigo both scoring a goal each to inspire their team to victory against Hammers.
