Ronaldo equals goalscoring record in Serie A, levels another record with 287 games less

- Cristiano Ronaldo equals Rui Costa's record of 42 Serie A goals when he scored against SPAL over the weekend

- It took the 35-year-old 52 matches to achieve the feat while his compatriot played 339 games across 12 years

- Ronaldo is now a goal away from becoming the highest scoring Portuguese in the Italian league's history

Cristiano Ronaldo move to the Italian Serie A has created another dimension for himself in terms of record breaking feats.

Not many Portuguese footballers have had successful spells in what used to be regarded as the toughest league in the world.

Before Ronaldo made his way into the lucrative league, his former international teammate Rui Costa was the most successful Portuguese that ever played in Serie A.

The now 47-year-old spent 12 years in Italy, played seven years for Fiorentina and the remaining five years for AC Milan.

And the attacking midfielder scored 42 goals in 339 matches in total that saw him emerge as the highest scoring Portuguese in Serie A.

But not until Ronaldo scored Juventus first goal against SPAL which made it his 42nd goal since he joined the Italian league from Real Madrid.

And it took the 35-year-old just 52 games and 287 matches less to equal Costa's record, who spent many years in Italy.

Ronaldo got onto to a pass from Juan Cuadrado and was on hand to finish from close range to score in his 1000th career game and his 21st in the league.

Costa won the Serie A and the Champions League during his spell with the Rossoneri but Ronaldo is yet to win the elite competition with Juve.

Juventus are on course to break their 14-year Champions League jinx when they take Lyon in a round of 16 clash.

The 32-year-old scored three goals in 20 minutes as Barcelona tore apart their opponents in the front of their home fans at the Camp Nou.

Messi who failed to find the back of the net in four matches scored four goals in the 5-0 demolition of Jose Luis Mendilibar's men.
