Army, DSS, police block UI gate as strike by non-academic staff toughens

- Men of the Nigerian Army, Police, DSS are manning the main gate of the University of Ibadan as the strike by the non-teaching staff enters week two

- The three unions of the University of Ibadan have been on strike for two weeks

- Intra-campus transportation system has also been shut down forcing students and staff of the university and the International school to walk

Strike by the non-academic staff unions of the University of Ibadan took another dimension on Thursday, February 27, as officers drawn from the Nigerian Army, DSS, NigeriaPolice and men of the Nigeria Police and Nigeria Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) are currently manning the gate of the university.

Legit.ng's regional reporter in Oyo state, Ridwan Kolawole, reports that the gun-carrying officers who stay outside the first gate of the institution are not harassing anyone.

The non-academic staff unions namely, NASU, SSANU, and NAAT began an indefinite strike last week over four issues and threatened at their congress which was held on Wednesday, February 26, to make things tough today, Thursday, February 27, 2020.

One of the issues is duplicated pension deductions which federal government deducts before paying into the university accounts.

The second issue is the university's refusal to hon our court judgment restraining it from withdrawing it financing and management of the school.

The third issue bothers on UI's non-payment of overtime for those providing special services.

The fourth reason University of Ibadan non-teaching staffers adduce for the indefinite strike is failure of the university to pay the workers their promotion allowances.

Our reporter who monitored the situation within the campus reveals that some principal officers of the university on Wednesday, February 27, escaped been attacked by the angry union members.

All gates that lead to the University of Ibadan were locked by the union as early as 6:30 am this morning.

Also offices such as exams and records has been shut down preventing students who need their transcript scholarship from pursuing the opportunity.

Although the undergraduates of the institution are writing their examinations, the strike does not affect them.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that UI replied the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) after the institution was dissatisfied with the allegation of admission manipulation leveled against it.

The institution asked the examination body to count it out of the alleged admission scam. The registrar of the university, Olubunmi O. Faluyi, in a statement issued after Senate's meeting, dismissed the allegation of the institution's involvement in any fraudulent act.
