- Governor Matawalle may soon defect to the APC in Zamfara state
- This was disclosed by the former governor of the state, Ahmed Yerima
- But the governor insisted that he would not leave PDP for APC
Former governor of Zamfara state, Ahmed Sani Yerima, has said that the current governor of the state, Bello Matawalle, would soon leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and join All Progressives Congress (APC).
Yerima, who is a serving member of the Senate, disclosed this during an interview with Daily Trust at his Abuja residence.
Legit.ng gathered that he said Governor Matawalle would defect to APC very soon but the governor in his reaction said he has no plan of leaving the PDP.
“You will not be surprised if he moves. Yes, we are working and we are talking. Every politician tries to get more people to their party especially governors. If I can have governors with me, the party will be better off,” Yerima said.
When asked if he was sure about the governor’s plan to defect, Yerima said: “I think we have gone very far with the process of his decamping. He will decamp very soon.”

The special adviser to governor Matawalle on public enlightenment, media and communication, Zailani Bappa, said people are just speculating about the possible defection of his boss to APC.
“I can tell you that there is nothing like defecting to APC by his excellency, governor Bello Muhammad Matawalle. He is busy attending to serious administrative issues. This is just a distraction”
“And we should understand that we can not stop people from expressing their opinion. Even if there is anything like that, it will be made public, but governor Bello Muhammad Matawalle hasn’t expressed any interest to decamp to APC,” Bappa added.
It would be recalled that the Supreme Court upheld the decision of the appeal court and declared as wasted the votes cast for the APC in the election. The apex court ordered that the candidate with the second-highest votes be sworn in.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that the family of late Alhaji Shehu Idris petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari over alleged plans by Governor Matawalle to demolish a property belonging to their father in Gusau, the state capital.
It was reported that in a petition to the president, the family accused the governor of persecuting them due to their political leanings.
A member of the family, Alhaji Mukhtar Shehu Idris, was the governor-elect of Zamfara in 2019 before his victory was upturned by the Supreme Court a few days to his inauguration last year.
