The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has backed the repatriation of Almajiri to their respective states of origin.

It said the move is a welcome development because the menace of streets begging by Almajiri is retrogressive.

This was disclosed by ACF national publicity secretary, Emmanuel Yawe.

The ACF however faulted the approach adopted by the governors, describing their approach has clumsy and uncoordinated, The Nation reports.

“The decision to repatriate Almajiris to their states was taken by the Northern Governors Forum and we have no quarrel with that because we don’t believe in the almajirinci system.

“It’s a retrogressive system. We don’t believe in it at all. It’s against the human development of the North and the development of the country. So, the ACF is against the almajiri system.

“So, the decision of the governors to take them to their states of origin and the state to find their families, we totally agree with it. This is because if somebody has given birth to a child, he should be in the position to look after that child and not to throw the child onto the streets.

“We support that decision. But the only problem is with the implementation. The implementation is very clumsy and the governors should sit up and implement in a proper way.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that following allegations that Almajiris are being smuggled into the southeast, Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi has declared that the children are not welcomed in his state.

Umahi said they won’t be entertained in any part of the state.

The Nation reports that though he commended northern governors for acknowledging the problem of almajiri, he, however, insisted that he will not be afraid to reject them.

“We will not be afraid to say that there will not be Almajiris in Ebonyi state and the northern governors I commend them, they said go to your state of origin.

“We will not allow Almajiris in Ebonyi state. Ebonyi will not allow Amajiris, they should go to their state of origin. We have to as a people to begin to tell ourselves the truth,” he emphasised.
