Tension as Premier League records 2 more coronavirus cases ahead of EPL resumption

- Premier League carried out second-round testing earlier this weekend

- Two tests came back positive out of the 996 that were carried out in all 20 clubs

- The EPL is still on course to return next month regardless of the pandemic ravaging the world

Premier League recorded two more cases of deadly coronavirus after the second batch of testing was carried out earlier this weekend.

According to reports, a total of 996 players and staff were tested in the first week of the club's return to training for the first time since mid-March.

However, two results came back positive after all 20 clubs have undergone two rounds of testing as the league prepares for resumption next month.

According to Sky Sport, the third round of the routine would be carried out on Monday and Tuesday to ensure the virus is not spread among players and staff when action returns.

This now takes the total number of EPL staff and players who have tested positive for the virus to eight out of a total 1,744 tests conducted in the first two rounds. This amounts to 0.45 percent of the tests coming back positive.

A statement on Saturday evening read: "The Premier League can today confirm that on Tuesday 19 May, Thursday 21 May and Friday 22 May, 996 players and club staff were tested for COVID-19. Of these, two have tested positive from two clubs.

"Players or club staff who have tested positive will now self-isolate for a period of seven days.

"The Premier League is providing this aggregated information for the purposes of competition integrity and transparency.

"No specific details as to clubs or individuals will be provided by the League and results will be made public after each round of testing."

Legit.ng earlier reported that Premier League club Burnley can confirm that their assistant manager Ian Woan has contracted deadly coronavirus and will be self-isolating until he fully recovers.

The Clarets added that the 52-year-old former midfielder did not show any symptom as when his result came back but has been asked to remain home.

They revealed that he will be in touch with the team regarding his training routine while he stays home for the next seven days when the test will be re-carried out.

Also, Watford defender Adrian Mariappa has disclosed that he was shocked after learning he tested positive to deadly coronavirus during the first wave of Premier League testing.

The 33-year-old ensured he followed all the guidelines laid down by the government to avoid contracting or spreading the virus. He further stated that he did not show symptoms of the infection.
