Barely a week after replacing lockdown with curfew in Rivers, Governor Nyesom Wike has given a fresh hint of another lockdown in the state as Covid-19 cases spike.

Speaking during a state-wide broadcast marking his fifth year in office on Friday, May 29, the Rivers governor lamented that the people of the state are shunning Covid-19 guidelines and protocols.

Wike expressed that the protocols guiding the use of facial masks were not formally followed, while similarly decrying that 12 people have been killed by the Covid-19 pandemic, The Nation reports.

According to the governor, the death of the 12 people as a result of coronavirus complications was a big tragedy to the state and the immediate families of the deceased.

"Regrettably, we have observed that the advisories, directives and regulations on social distancing and the compulsory wearing of face masks are being ignored at alarming proportions in the state, much to our collective discomfort and peril," he said.

Wike said the state has identified banks, businesses and shopping centres that not adhering to the face masks guidelines - an act which he described as "very irresponsible and risky behaviours in the face of the invisible and ravaging pandemic."

The governor also stressed that people are spotted at unauthorised social gatherings in what is fuelling the spike in the cases of coronavirus in the state.

He called for advice from well-meaning residents of Rivers, saying the state will "welcome constructive criticisms devoid of politics and mischief."

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control Agency (NCDC) on Friday night, May 29 announced 14 new cases of coronavirus in Rivers, bringing total cases in the state to 190.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the sum of N450 million has been released by Governor Wike to the victims of the bloody 2019 general elections in Ijaw communities in Abonema, Akuku-Toru local government area of the state.

The governor met with the victims, deceased families and the council of chiefs at their townhall in Abonema on Monday, May 25.

According to the report, the governor assured them that their bank account numbers would be credited with the amount of money due them from Wednesday, May 27.
