Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud has revealed that God told him to remain at Stamford Bridge and that was why he signed a new one-year extension.

The French World Cup-winning striker was initially meant to run out of contract with the Blues this month, but the club convinced him to stay till next summer.

He said was close to leaving the London club earlier this year after failing to get enough playing time which could afford him named in the France squad for Euro 2020 tourney.

SunSport revealed that Frank Lampard turned down Giroud's transfer request because he had not found a replacement for him.

Giroud said: “‘I very nearly left the club but I really think that God wanted me to stay at Chelsea.

I was supposed to leave in the January transfer window because I wasn’t playing much and I needed more game time to make the France squad for Euro 2020.

The manager told me that he couldn’t let me leave because he didn’t have anyone to replace me.

"Everyone knows what happened so I won’t go back over it but the coach spoke to me privately and told me that he’d give more games.

He kept his word and what then mattered to me was proving to him that he could count on me when I was called upon.

Meanwhile, Giroud is unhappy with the mode of training ahead of Premier League return but insisted that they have to comply with all the government rules to keep all players safe.

He added that the new style of training makes his body feel the strain of training forced on them by coronavirus pandemic.

He said: "There are quite a lot of differences. ‘We’ve been working in groups of five and then we need to maintain a two-metre minimum social distance between each other, meaning no contact.

Something else that’s changed compared to usual pre-seasons is that we only get 15 minutes of treatment after training.

Normally in pre-season, you’re very demanding with your muscles and use them a lot, especially when you haven’t been training for over two months.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Olivier Giroud is concerned about himself and his teammates after they all returned to training amid the global pandemic.

The Frenchman claimed that their training routine in Chelsea's camp is having an adverse effect of them adding that almost all of his teammates have developed blisters.
