Drama as NFF cancels current NPFL season, reveals date for start of a new campaign





- NFF has announced the cancellation of the 2019-20 NPFL season

- The football body states that the new campaign will commence in September/October and will run until May 2021

- Plateau United, Rivers United, Lobi Stars and the 2019 champions of AITEO Cup will represent the country at CAF continental championship

Nigeria Football Federation can confirm that the Nigeria Professional Football League season has been cancelled due to the outbreak of coronavirus.

The apex football body made the announcement on Friday, July 10 - about four months after football activities were suspended in the country.

According to the mail circulated through the NFF media channel, the resolution was reached via a virtual meeting that had all the stakeholders in attendance.

The Chairpersons of all the National Leagues and the President of the Nigeria Referees Association, the Executive Committee of the NFF among others made the decision.

It was said that it was expedient to abruptly end the nation's topflight to ensure that the health and safety of all concerned are not compromised.

Plateau United are the log leaders as at the time the league was suspended having gathered 49 points from 25 matches.

Rivers United and Lobi Stars complete the top three on the table with 45 and 43 points respectively after the same number of games.

The NFF also confirms that the above-named clubs would be presented to CAF as representatives for continental championships.

There will be no promotion to or relegation from the NPFL for the 2019/2020 season, and this goes for all other tiers of competitions in the country.

Meanwhile, the new campaign is expected to kick off in September/October 2020 and will run through till May 2021.

But this will be subjected to the full reopening of the country and the approval of the health authorities.

The NFF has also concluded plans to present the 2019 AITEO Cup champions to CAF for the 2020/2021 CAF Inter-Club competition as Nigeria’s club in the Confederation Cup.

While the 2020/21 season of the oldest cup competition kicks off in September/October to end May 2021 subject to the full reopening of the country and the approval of the health authorities.

The NFF, however, states that all dates for the 2020/2021 season to start are subject to the directives of the Federal Government in line with COVID-19 protocols.

In addition, the full enforcement of licensing regulations and financial controls for the NPFL will commence from the 2020/2021 season. All clubs are required to comply, failing which they will be barred from participating.

The Nigeria Football Federation will formally take the resolutions to the next General Meeting of its Congress for ratification. In the meantime, these resolutions have been formally communicated to the Federal Ministry of Youth & Social Development.

The French Ligue 1 chiefs this week made the decision to cancel the whole 2019/20 season due to the continuous threat of deadly coronavirus which has killed many people in the world.

The government in France made it clear that all football activities in the country must be suspended until September with the hopes that the pandemic will get a solution.
