The Nigerian government has disclosed that data tariffs in the country will crash by 40 % in the next five years.

The minister of communications and digital economy, Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, made the disclosure on Monday, July 13, at the opening ceremony of digital skills training for ICT journalists, Daily Trust reported.

He stated that Nigerians would be able to explore more opportunities available on the internet with low-cost data in addition to hundreds of more jobs that will be created across the country.

Pantami explained that the government plans to ensure that at least 80 million Nigerians have access to broadband internet by 2025.

“With all these the telecom operators will no longer give excuses and we’ll now ensure that prices of data come down by 40% by 2025”, he said.

Legit recall that the federal government had in the past called for telecom companies to reduce the price of data and calls for Nigerians.

One of those instances occurred on Monday, March 30 when the minister of communications, Dr. Isa Pantami, has urged telecommunications service providers in Nigeria to further reduce the prices of data and call rates being offered subscribers in this critical time.

The appeal was made by the minister as the country continues to combat the global pandemic called coronavirus.

Pantami who also made the passionate appeal on his Twitter handle said he is urging the companies as the person in charge of policy of the telecom sector.

Since many Nigerians have been restricted to their homes to curb the spread of coronavirus, a good number of people took to Twitter with #freedata to urge telecom companies to provide free packages.

According to most people, this would go a long way as they struggle to cope with staying indoors as a result of the outbreak of the virus.
