On this day in history, 51 years ago, Thembekile "Thembi" Mandela died in a car accident. Thembi was the son of late former president Nelson Mandela and his wife, Evelyn Mase.

Madiba was serving a life sentence at Robben Island at the time of his son's death and he was not allowed to attend Thembi's funeral.

According to South African History Online, authorities of the previous regime even denied Mandela details surrounding his son's accident.

The website reported Mandela was filled with anguish over not being allowed to attend the funeral or know what exactly happened to his son.

Life does have strange coincidences. On the exact same date, 51 years apart, another one of Mandela's children passed away.

Thembekile died on the exact same date as his step-sister, Zindzi Mandela.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Zindziswa 'Zindzi' Mandela had passed away at the age of 59, according to the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

The daughter of struggle veterans Nelson Mandela and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela had served as an SA ambassador to Denmark.

ANC spokesperson, Pule Mabe, said Zindzi would always be remembered for her speech to a mass gathering in Soweto in 1985 - where she read a letter written by her father - refusing an offer by then President PW Botha to release him.

Mandela leaves behind four children and her husband. Zindzi was a political activist and helped fight the oppressive apartheid regime.
