FG gives update on NECO registration and exam date

The Nigerian government has disclosed that the registration for the National Examination Council (NECO) will continue running while students write sit for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) exams.

The disclosure was made by the minister of state for education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, at the media briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 in Abuja on Monday, August 3, NAN reported.

He said the NECO examination will start on October 10, about a week to the end of National Business and Technical Examination Board (NABTEB) exams.

“Once the WAEC examination starts on August 17, it will run till the middle of September and NABTEB will start immediately and run till October,” Nwajiuba said.

“NECO examination will start on October 10, about a week to the end of NABTEB and run through to November.”

According to the minister, the NECO and NABTEB registrations will be ongoing as WAEC conducts its exams.

“Right now, we are lifting the registration for NABTEB and NECO, continuously running, even while we are about to begin WAEC," he said.

Meanwhile, in preparation for the resumption of third term, the federal government on Monday, August 3, said that owners of private school are entitled to charge fees for exiting students.

Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, the minister of state for education, disclosed this in Abuja.

The minister stated this in reaction to a question if it was right for private schools to charge fees for third term since the period students would spend was short.

Nwajiuba went on to note that private school owners were running a business venture and not a charity organisation.

Nwajiuba maintained that the resumption of schools is presently for students in graduating classes.

In another report, the ministry of health has cautioned against the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic" which it said will be disastrous to the economy of the country and lives.

Speaking during the Covid-19 presidential task force briefing on Monday, August 3, Dr Sani Aliyu who is the coordinator of the committee gave the warning.

Sani urged "businesses that are reopening to align themselves" with the safety protocols and guidelines of the coronavirus.
