Edo state governor, Godwin Obaseki, has dismissed a petition against him sent to the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC).

The petition was sent by one Andrew Egboigbe, who is said to be a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ward 3, Orhionmwon local government area of Edo state.

In the petition, Egboigbe accused Governor Obaseki of unfair award of contracts to companies.

No iota of truth in ICPC petition of unfair contract award by Obaseki, says Osagie

Responding, Governor Obaseki's spokesman, Crusoe Osagie, said: “The allegation is false and a feeble attempt to tarnish the image of the Edo state governor.

“Edo state under Governor Obaseki prides herself as one of the most transparent states in the management of her finances.

“As a matter of fact, Edo has been rated highly by the World Bank and other development institutions for her openness and transparency in the allocation of scarce resources, beginning with the process of making her budget, awards of contracts and release of funds to contractors.

“We understand that in the electioneering times we are in, such bogus and baseless claims will be sponsored by members of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) and their allies, who are threatened by Governor Obaseki’s growing popularity and democratic credentials predicated on his sterling performance in all the sectors of the state.

“As we head into the election, our eyes are constantly on the ball and we will not be distracted by such falsehoods.”

Meanwhile, the governor's spokesman has described the manifesto of Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu as outdated and controversial.

Speaking in Benin city on Tuesday, August 3, Osagie challenged the APC governorship candidate to tell Edo people the plans he has for the state's economy, foisted by COVID-19.

Speaking on Ize-Iyamu's manifesto, the governor's media aide said: “There is no page in the so-called Simple Agenda, written by Dr Don Pedro Obaseki, where a post-COVID economy was mentioned.

“Edo people will not vote for a candidate that is still dwelling on developmental issues of 2016, the year the Simple Agenda was written.

“The issues outlined in the Simple Agenda have long been overtaken by the reality of today and the future, which Obaseki calls a post-COVID-19 economy.”

Recall that Osagie had earlier accused the APC of having no substance in their campaign, adding that the opposition party is “only adept at spinning the rumour mill and concocting alternative facts to massage the egos of their paymasters.”

He also accused the APC of shying away from an issue-based campaign “but rely primarily on tale-telling and propaganda.”
